Our School

Leapwood Avenue Elementary School, preschool through grade five, is nestled in a suburban middle-class neighborhood in Carson, California.  We are a relatively small school with 378 students, of which 89% are of African-American descent.  Our language of instruction for all of Leapwood’s students is English.   Our ethnic make-up does not represent the majority ethnic make-up in comparison to other schools in LAUSD and our local district.

We pride ourselves on continued increases in our API to 764 in 2010.  The percentage of Leapwood students at grade level in English language arts and Math are 41% and 52% respectively.  Of our students, there are 56% who are economically disadvantaged and 15% who have a learning-disability.  Our autism learning program is renowned throughout Los Angeles, and known throughout the United States and Asia.

The Leapwood School Community’s mission is to provide the opportunity for students to appreciate cultural diversity, and become active learners in a safe and positive environment.  We will also implement rigorous curriculum that will not only be aligned with the state standards, but will be challenging and enriching enough so that students will be able to succeed throughout their school years.  We will encourage them to become productive, independent and responsible citizens of society.  Completing our mission successfully takes every stakeholder - parents, teachers, administrators, and students.
