Joining PTO Is Important

Are you wondering why should you join the PTO?  Why should I volunteer through the PTO?  Why does the PTO ask for a membership fee?

Good questions.  Really understanding the need of the PTO requires that we first understand that decades of budget cutback have affected public education in Carson.  Let's review what the LAUSD does and does not finance for its campuses.

LAUSD pays and determines the salaries, working schedule, and number of our teachers, administrators, library assistant, special education service professionals, office and janitorial staff.  It pays the utility bills—telephone, electric, water, heating, and cooling.  It pays for textbooks.

LAUSD does not pay for copy machines and services that Leapwood needs.  It does not pay for Playground Equipment Systems, like the type on the kindergarten yard.  It does not pay for a computer instructor, psycho motor instructor, or teacher assistants,  It does not pay for enough teacher aides, teacher supplies, library books, paper and other supplies to meet the needs of our 200+ students. It does not pay for buses for field trips or plants to spruce up the yard. If we want to enhance our child's education with these items the funding must come from sources other than the school district.  That's why the Leapwood Avenue Elementary School PTO was established.  Our goal is to enhance the educational processes of the students at this school by raising the money to cover the costs of these things.

Leapwood uses its Title I and categorical funds that we receive from the Federal Government to pay for the copier and its service, psycho motor instructor, and additional classroom supplies for our 400 students.  Title I is a federal subsidy that is given for students who are living at or below poverty levels.  Leapwood students primarily reside in middle-income families.  Therefore, the PTO must raise the monies on our own or go without these educational enhancements.

But there is good news!  We have an outstanding staff, dedicated parents, and the best students anywhere!  Because the greatest costs of running a school — teacher salaries and a building — are covered by the district, we can with a little extra, offer our students an education on par with the most elite schools. By banding together, we can continue to do great things.
